SKULLS DOUBT

Hi everyone!
I find a option in Advance Settings that activate the skulls in game, my question is
I need to find every skull in the levels or i can activate the skulls without get them?
I activated IWHBYD skull but i see no difference

You can activate them from the menus without unlocking and play in the campaign with them, i'm not sure if I remember someone saying a few work in multiplayer but please don't try or use them in public multiplayer games or you likely will be banned.
